Before earning my teaching credential, I experienced a variety of grade levels. I volunteered in a second grade classroom for 2 years while earning my bachelor's degree.  Later, I student taught in 2nd grade as well as 6th grade and 5th grade for a semester. After earning my teaching credential, I began working as a 5th grade teacher in Baldwin Park Unified School District. I taught there for two years and then moved to ABC Unified School district, in 5th grade at Bragg Elementary for another 2 years.  I happily joined the Nixon Elementary family in 1999, again in 5th grade, and have enjoyed teaching here for the past 12 years.

I expect from my students what I would expect from anyone.  I expect my students to be responsible for their work and their actions and be honest about their choices.  I also expect my students to come to school with a positive attitude toward their learning, for with a positive outlook, SO much is possible.  On a grander scale, I expect my students to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their background or challenges, and have tolerance for others and their differences. If my students can learn these life skills, they will have great things to contribute to society as a whole, now and in their futures.

Welcome to 5th Grade!

We have a very busy and fun year ahead of us with lots to learn and many exciting academic adventures.  I look forward to getting to know the students and sharing my love of learning.

Chatters and Blabbers
All 5th grade students will be participating in a public speaking program called Chatters and Blabbers.  This trimester, the fifth graders will be telling a children's story giving them the opportunity to practice speaking to a group without having to write an original speech.  Your child will bring home papers the week before he/she will speak.  When your child is assigned to give their formal presentation, or their blabber speech< please have your child hare his/her speech with you. It is an excellent way for them to practice before sharing in front of our class. I look forward to hearing all of the creative presentations.

Science
We have started to learn about cells in our class and have been surprised by what is in such a small living thing. We also have looked at onion cells in microscopes.  It was cool to see them live rather than just in pictures.  To help the students further visualize cell organelles and learn the matching jobs, there are a few interactive websites below. Make sure you look at the cell membrane as well as the whole cell.  If the links do not just open up, please copy and paste them into your address window.  Science Rules!
